Students present;  Apurva Mody, Cecilia Hurtado, Courtney Widerman, Dina Simon, Keemia Kasravi, Keerit Kohli, Kurt Huckleberry, Henar Abdelmonem, Dania Mohammad, and Fatima Usmani.

Adults present;  Raymond Elias, Omar Salama, Mohamad Abdillah, Doris Longmeand, Lynn Davis, Steve Wiebe, and Mike Penn.

  • 3:11 à Kurt’s Reflection on “What it is to be Episcopalian”
    • Anglican similar to Catholicism
    • More progressive/inclusive
    • There is confession, but there aren’t confessionals
    • Created with the American colonies in the late 1600s
    • Part of the Anglican community, but in America
    • Same scriptures and sacraments, but they changed some rules
    • What is a daily Sunday practice?
      • Singing
      • Reading of certain traditions
      • Hymn from preacher
      • Refection or understanding of psalm
      • Communion
      • Passing of peace
      • Forgiving of sins

    • How to write an agenda (tab 2)
      • Come prepared (so people know what is going to happen)
      • Keerit is in charge or making the agenda for the next meeting
      • How to take minutes?
      • Basic Principles of Debriefing (tab 6)
        • Principles noted and were used for our review of the IYCOC Info Booth

  • Debriefing of Global Village by Kurt and Keemia
    • Tent of interfaith had many booths
    • Performances by different faiths
    • Tried to encourage people to sign up and join IYCOC
    • Keemia learned:
      • Nice experience
      • People asked questions
      • Learned something new
      • Lots of people, but mostly families
      • We increased understanding more than recruitment
      • Recommendations for next time:
        • More engagement
        • Stand in FRONT of the booth instead of sitting behind it
        • Pass pamphlets out
        • Have a video playing
        • Be more engaging
        • Subtitles on video?
        • Apurva will bring ideas for the next meeting on marketing nonprofits

 

  • 3:47 à How do we recruit more people?
    • Make it a priority
    • Reach out to other congregations, Mr. Penn to check out Buddhist temple in Buena Park
    • Mission statement is what we are about and what we are selling
    • Why are we doing this?
      • Get rid of prejudice
      • Are we doing interfaith education or recruiting new members
      • Go to venues that have open conversations
      • Communicate with youth groups
      • What is our goal for Hearts and Hands

    • Proposed agenda for Sunday forum submitted by Sirman
    • Confirmed Roger Smith will be MC (yay!)
    • Make clear that they should make the project and submit AFTER project is actually made
    • Extend the due date of projects to mid-February
    • Expressing faith through art can mean Your own specific spiritual level
    • Send art submittal forms to this email: mpenn_iyoc@outlook.com
    • As an encouragement to get tens to submit art projects, tell them they can include this  art project as part of their  AP portfolio
    • New project Due date: Feb. 13 Thursday midnight

    • So fun last year
    • Hygiene kits, in a assembly line will be our project again this year
    • We added holiday cards
    • I bag per family
    • Saturday Nov. 23
    • Bake sale (bring money!)
    • Open to everyone

    • Cal State Fullerton
    • September 15th
    • IYCOC to put on a dialogue same as last year which was a success
    • Ceci is signed up to go, let Mr. Penn know if you are interested

 

  • 4:26à Center for Living Peace
    • Tuesday evening Nov. 5
    • Founder of interfaith youth Core, Eboo Patel, will be the featured speaker
    • 6:30-9:00 @ UCI Student Center
    • Free- we have 15 complimentary tickets still available.  Let Mr. Penn know ASAP if you want to attend.

 

  • 4:30 à Leadership Initiative: Steve Wiebe
    • New vision partner
    • 3 day project during summer ( Late June)
    • Empower students of different backgrounds
    • Openings  for 50 high school students.  Each participant receives a $100 for attending.
    • Go to places of worship
    • Service learning
    • Bonding time
    • Keep in touch and help students after the event
    • Leadership training

 

  • Postpone:  50th anniversary of the signing of the 1964 civil until next meeting

 

  • 4:55 Next IYCOC Youth Leadership Board meeting will be from 3-5 pm on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the Islamic Institute of Orange County, 1220 N. State College Blvd. Anaheim, Ca.
